Reveal Tannoy 802

The Tannoy Reveal 802 is a fairly new, entry-level set of studio monitors whose design, features and most importantly, sound quality are causing some heads to turn. I genuinely had a good feeling while unboxing the Reveals.

Tannoy Reveal 802 What is it?

Bi-amped with the crossover set at 1.5kHz, the Tannoy Reveal 802 monitors cover a massive frequency range from 42Hz to 42kHz. The connections are simple and have a really nice Aux-In feature that allows you to connect a computer/iPod/music player directly without the need for an external sound interface. What makes this even better is that once daisy-chained, you can assign monitors left and right. At 100 watts (75 + 25), these monitors are loud. The manual says they can deliver 114dB SPL and somehow I don’t doubt that, even though I’m not really inclined to try it.

Who is it for?

Electronic music producers, definitely.

Style

I really like the look of these monitors. They are music-heavier and bigger than I’d imagined, but that hasn’t altered their sleekness in any way. I’m glad their power light is at the back, as it’s a bit too bright and would have hurt the eye if it was upfront.

Usability

I worked on a mixdown on these monitors and wasn’t disappointed. I found the overall sound clean but encountered a little muddiness in the low range. Truth be told, I’ll attribute that to the studio I was using, as it was on the smaller side without perfect acoustic treatment. I believe that in a moderately large space with basic acoustic treatment, this muddiness would not exist. That being said, I really didn’t feel the need for an additional bass extension as I could hear and feel the low end quite well.

Upside

The Tannoy Reveals have a solid sound, an even better price, and sleek looks.

Downside

Not perfect in a very small room.

Final Call

Even though I was initially slightly put off by the muddiness, I would recommend these monitors. In fact, the more I use them, the more I like them. The price makes the set well worth it.
