What is it?
Packed with an awesome set of accessories, the RODE NT1-A MIC is a large diaphragm condenser microphone that’s considered to be one of the world’s quietest studio-grade microphones.
Who’s it for?
This condenser mic would be perfect for someone who’s looking to upgrade either from a standard dynamic microphone or an entry-level condenser microphone.
Style
As far as looks are concerned, it hasn’t travelled too far from the classic old-school, nickel-plated finish on the outer shell. However, it comes packed with a super sturdy shock mount, a mountable pop filter, a high-quality XLR cable and a dust cover.
Usability
Although the RODE NT1-A has a fixed cardioid pattern, it is still fairly versatile. The large 1” capsule with a gold-plated diaphragm delivers great sound across the spectrum, ensuring a warm low end, fairly even mid-range and a smooth high end. With self noise at 5dB-A, it delivers a rich and wide dynamic range. It’s great for recording vocals and acoustic guitars and can also pass off as a decent overhead microphone.
Here are some audio samples:
Upside
Good sound, ultra low noise, fairly priced and comes with a very sturdy shock mount. After testing it out on vocals, acoustic guitars and guitar cabinets, I can safely say that this microphone delivers great sound and dynamics.
Downside
Slightly boomy when placed on-axis, and can sound a bit shrill if angled incorrectly.
Final Call
For its price, the RODE NT1-A definitely delivers more than you would expect. Although primarily a great vocal microphone, it can also be used to record various other acoustic instruments.
