Moog Little Phatty Review

The Moog Little Phatty is a powerful monophonic analogue synth with 100 per cent analogue signal path manufactured by Moog Music from 2007 to 2013. It was Bob Moog’s final project, his adieu gift to everyone. Over the course of its seven-year production run, the Little Phatty has gone through three incantations including The Tribute, Stage I, and Stage II editions. During that time, the Little Phatty has become one of the best-selling professional analog synthesizers in history. Its sonic impact on modern music can be heard on thousands of records, and its signature swooped-back silhouette can be seen in top recording facilities around the world

Oscillators on Little Phatty

MOOG LITTLE PHATTY SOUND SOURCES

The Little Phatty has
– 2 ultra-stable voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs)
– An LFO with six wave shapes, with four destinations and rate controls, which gets the little phatty a bit warmed up.
The oscillators have a four-octave setting. Oscillator 1‘s fine-tuning is controlled by the global tuning control, while Oscillator 2 may be tuned up or down a perfect fifth relative to Oscillator 1. The VCOs have separate volume controls.

Fliters and knobs on the Little Phatty

FILTER
The filter is a classic Moog Ladder design. It sounds smooth and natural. One new development at that point in time was the filter’s ‘overload’ parameter, which adds some grunge and makes it fat & dirty.

ADSR
Two ADSR envelope generators are available for the Amplitude and the filter.

GLIDE
‘Glide’ control allows pitch slides up to five seconds over the keyboard’s three-octave range.

LFO A single LFO with the choice of 4 waveforms (saw, squarer, triangle, ramp) + Filter Env. + Osc 2, (Sample & Hold and Noise also available on Stage Edition) and destinations being Filter, Pitch,  Wave,  Osc. 2.

Moog Little Phatty Keyboard – 37-note keyboard with 2 Octave Transpose
The LP has a three-octave (C to C), 37-note keyboard. The octave buttons let the artist access two lower and two higher octaves, giving the keyboard an effective playing range of seven octaves.

Controls – MIDI IN/OUT, KBD Gate, Pitch CV, Volume CV, Filter CV

The little Phatty sonic impact can be seen on contemporary music with internationally renowned acts like Rush, Jack White, Queens of the Stone Age, No Doubt, Bernie Worrell being few of artist who has used little phatty on stage.

Sound creation is sometimes a tiresome process, but the Little Phatty makes it super easy to interact with. We hope the Moog Little Phatty will inspire as many young players as Bob Moog’s creations did during his lifetime.
