Our newest Senior Faculty member, Phillip Cunningham, hails from the UK and will be teaching Audio Engineering and production at I Love Music Academy. We had a chat with ‘Pippi Ciez’ to discuss his musical journey and his plans for our students.

How did you get started in the music industry? Tell us about your background and your career so far?
Believe it or not, I started out at 13 as a grime/garage MC. I quickly realized that writing lyrics was more than a hobby, that I wanted to learn how to DJ and to become a producer and composer. I aced my A-levels in music technology, and fell in love for the first time at the age of 19 – with deep and progressive house.

Straight out of college, I found work at a high-tech studio, teaching youth how to produce, compose, record and engineer audio. After a year at another company, with a focus on creating audio for video and advertising, I received an exciting call: to engineer audio in Ibiza for Marco Loco. Naturally, I packed my gear and flew out the same week!

I ended up staying in Ibiza for 4 years. Marco and I started producing tracks together, which gained traction around Ibiza pretty quick. We even released an EP together. I was convinced by Marco that I should start DJ-ing again as I was producing so much, and I went on to hold residencies all over the island. I progressed from deep house to tech house under the alias @IT, and released tracks on labels worldwide.

After returning to the UK, I opened my own studio as an engineer and tutor, and created a duo called Walking With Kings. We produce dark melodic techno and perform across Europe. I also started my own record label, Inward Records, and developed a sound as a solo artist, Pippi Ciez. Utilizing healing frequencies, tones and textures along with Asian percussions and instruments, a sound I feel is special to me.

At the same time, I continued to study further and became a certified teacher and moderator for education.

What brought you to India, and what do you hope to bring to I Love Music Academy?
Education has always been very important to me, and I’m looking forward to imparting all the knowledge and skills I’ve gained over the past 15 years. From songwriting to composing, producing and DJing, running a record label and founding a booking agency, I’ve experienced every facet of the music industry.

I listen to all genres of music – for example, I’m really into Techno/ Deep House, film music and binaural healing/meditation tones – and I also hope to introduce our students to a variety of artists and composers across the spectrum.

My current projects coincided perfectly with my move to India, and my new sound felt just right for it. During the next year at I Love Music Academy, I’ll continue to play worldwide, with upcoming gigs in Germany, Rishikesh, Thailand and the UK.

Finally, who are some of your favourite artists and producers?
Techno: Recondite, Mind Against
Film Music: Hanz Zimmer, Daft Punk
Indie: Howling, Coldplay
Soul: Anita Baker, Sade
Hip Hop: Timberland
Experimental: Nils Frahm, Rival Consoles, Kiasmos
